Making Gum Recession a Thing of the Past

Gum recession refers to a condition where gums pull back from the surface of the tooth and expose the tooth which makes it easier for bacteria to build up. It is hard to diagnose in the early stages as the changes that occur are asymptomatic. Just like in the rest of the world, Frisco gum recession is widespread and it catches most people unaware as it occurs gradually.

1.  Symptoms you should look out for

  •         Inflammation and Bleeding-These are signs of periodontal diseases. Infections from bacteria cause gums to recede. It may cause loss of teeth if not treated promptly.
  •         Teeth that look longer– As a result of the loss of gum tissue, the teeth may appear to be longer even when they are perfectly normal.
  •         Sensitive or loose Teeth– Due to receding gums, cementum, which protects the root canal, is exposed and the dentin tubules below it become more susceptible to stimuli.
  •         Hormone level– Estrogen levels can make gums sensitive and vulnerable especially during puberty and pregnancy.
  •         Crooked teeth-When teeth are misaligned, force is exerted on the gums and their surroundings, which allows the gums to recede.
  •         Pain when chewing.
  •         Bad breath.

2.  Causes of gum recession

  1.     Poor oral Hygiene-Improper flossing and brushing can build up plaque. The plaque has bacterial toxins that erode the jawbone.
  2. 2.     Overaggressive Brushing- It is just as dangerous as brushing the gums softly. Brushing too hard erodes the enamel and irritates the gum tissue.
  3.     Genetics– Research shows that 30 percent of the population may get it even when they take care of their teeth properly as they have been predisposed to the condition.

3.  How you can make your gums healthy

  •         Floss daily
  •         Use an electric toothbrush
  •         Massage your gums frequently
  •         Brush your teeth the right way
  •         Quit smoking

4.  How can gum recession be corrected?

Different types of surgical procedures can be carried out by a dentist or a periodontist. They are determined by the severity of the condition.

  1.   Bone grafting-The dentist may have to replace the bone that surrounds your tooth root with a graft if the gum disease has damaged it.
  2. Guided tissue regeneration- For bone to grow back, a tiny piece of material is placed between your gum tissue and bone.
  3.   Protein gel- A gel containing special proteins is applied to the affected root to encourage bone and tissue growth.
  4. Flap Surgery-Small cuts are made on your gums and a section of tissue is lifted by surgeons. Tartar and bacteria from under your tooth and gums are then removed. It is the most common procedure.

Your rate of recovery will depend on the severity of your disease and the type of procedure that you’ve had. Minor bleeding and discomfort should be expected after the procedure

However, you can also decide to use natural remedies to reverse receding gums.  They include:

  •         Drinking green tea
  •         Taking septilin in either syrup or capsule form
  •         Oil pulling
  •         Rinsing your mouth with a saltwater solution
  •         Applying Aloe Vera gel
  •         Eating foods that contain omega-3 fatty acids
  •         Rinsing your mouth with hydrogen peroxide
