Procrastinate Much? Here is How You Can Stop Procrastinating

Maybe you have an important deadline around the corner, yet instead of working, you are using your time to check your emails, watch movies, social media, or surfing forums and blogs. Even though you know you should be working, for some reason you don’t feel like it.

Procrastination is when we put aside what we should be working, to squander our free time doing everything but that important task. The problem is when the deadline is near we start to worry that we haven’t done anything and wish we did it earlier.

Chronic procrastinators are looped in this endless cycle. Slacking, putting things aside, delaying, hiding from important tasks, facing important tasks when its unavoidable, and repeating the cycle all over again. Procrastinating is a bad habit and it stops people from achieving the best results in life.

If you don’t do something about it, procrastination will take over your life and eventual leave you stuck in a place of no progress. The same way you would check into WV drug rehab to curb an addiction, you should do the same procrastination. Here are steps to help you beat the procrastination habit:

Breakdown your work into little steps

When we subconsciously assume that the work is too much for us, we procrastinate. If you think the work is a lot, you should break down the work into little parts and focus on a single part at a time.  If you find yourself procrastinating the work even then, you should break it further. You will realize that breaking down the work makes it simple.

When you break down the work, the work will seem more manageable. Focus on the parts differently and get them done to your best ability. While working on one part, avoiding thinking about the other parts. Move to the next part once you are done with the other.

Consider changing your environment

The environment end to have an impact on our productivity. For instance, your work space could be too comfortable that it makes you want to snuggle and sleep. If that is the case, then you should consider changing your work space

Environments also lose their effects after some time. So an environment that used to inspire you may not do so after some time. If this is the case, then you should consider changing the environment and make it more inspiring.

Use a specific deadline timeline

One of the biggest reasons people procrastinate is when they have a specific deadline. Specific deadlines give us the impression that there is enough time and so we tend to push back the task until it is too late.

Breakdown the task and create a timeline with deadlines that are specific for each small task. This makes you aware that you have to finish the job at a specific time. You also need to make sure that the timelines give you the urgency to act.

You can break down your goals into daily, weekly, monthly task lists that are a call to action. They will make sure that you are able to finish the task a particular date.

Associate with people who push you to take action

The people you hang out with can largely affect your focus because they influence your habits. Identify the friend, colleagues, or people who trigger you to do better. Such people are the go getters. Those are the people you should be hanging out with.

Eliminate he pit-stops that make you want to procrastinate

If you procrastinate a lot its because you make it easy to do so. Identify what takes up most of your time and work your way around it. You also need to get rid of all the things that always distract you.

Get a companion

Getting a companion will make the entire process more fun. This should be a person who also has their own set of goals. The idea is to make sure that you are both accountable to your plans and goals.

You don’t have to have the same goals even though that would be better because you would learn from each other. Tal regularly and ask each other about the goals they made and make sure that there is progress.

Re-clarify your goals

If you have been a victim of procrastination for a long period of time, I may be a reflection of a misalignment of what you what and what you are presently doing. The more we discover ourselves, the more we outgrow some of the goals we had and develop new ones to reflect what we are becoming.

You should take a vacation or a small trip, or whatever you need to get away from, your work and take the time to re-group yourself. Determine what you want to achieve and how you want to get there and the steps you need to take to get here. Identify whether your current work aligns with what you want to achieve and if not, what can you do about that?

Avoid over-complicating things

People have the assumption of waiting for the perfect time to do what they always wanted. The make excuses of how now is not the right time to do one or two things. However, there is never really the perfect time and if you keep waiting for it, you will never be able to accomplish anything.

People who like to be perfectionists are the ones who tend to procrastinate. You need to start small even when the timing is not perfect.

Find a grip and just do it

You may get all the advice you need, but at the end of the day you have to take action. You can do all the planning, strategizing, and hypothesizing, but failing to take action will leave you stuck in the same situation.

The reality is, you will never procrastinate your way to success and that will never happen even in the future. If you want to get stuff done, get it a grip and just do it. End the reign of procrastination in your life by doing everything to numb the habit.
