Protein and caffeine – sounds like a great mix, doesn’t it? Many who are looking to increase their productivity levels both in the gym and at work are always on the search for the perfect combination. But is it possible?
Whey protein comes from cow’s milk. I love it because it’s easy to digest, low in fat and works as a perfect boost both before and after my workouts. However, it can work just as well at any other point in the day to encourage protein synthesis- which helps your muscles grow and recover from exercise.
But, to be honest, how many of us can say we honestly enjoy a thick, milky drink first thing in the morning? My bet is: not many.
Yes, it’s tasty, but won’t give you the same wake-up call as your morning coffee does. So wouldn’t it be great if you could combine caffeine with protein to create the perfect all-in-one power beverage? I’m here to tell you that it is!
A rumour went around a while ago, following research from Cornell University, that mixing protein powder with boiling water would denature the protein. This means the speed at which the protein is absorbed and the solubility of the amino acids would be slightly decreased.
It is important to note the key word here: ‘slightly’. There Is nothing to prove that your body knows the difference, or that the protein will have any less of an effect than if it was simply mixed with water.
According to HealthcareWeekly, adding protein powder to your morning coffee will add a lovely sweetness to your drink and make you feel energised and ready to tackle the day: whether that’s hitting the gym, taking the kids to school or just heading into work.
So, if you’re ready to step away from the rumour mill and learn how to incorporate protein coffee into your diet, here’s how.
To make sure you get the mix exactly right, follow these steps:
1) Let your coffee cool. Either add a drop of cold water or milk, and give the drink a few minutes to drop in temperature. This will make sure the powder doesn’t react with the hot water and create a strange texture.
2) Add the powder gradually. If you’re just using a scoop, measure it out first then add carefully while continuously stirring with another spoon.
3) Stir until powder is completely dissolved. If any lumps remain, push them to the side of the cup to break them up. Enjoy your drink cold.
I find it easiest to make a pot in advance – I mix it the night before and pop it in the fridge to drink in the morning.
You can even experiment with frozen coffee – this is especially tasty for a hot weekend. Blend powder, ice, and coffee together for a beautifully smooth and refreshing beverage. I’ve even been known to try out protein coffee ice pops, which are perfect to take with you on the go.
Now, this might seem like a bit of a long process for a morning drink. Many of us are way too busy to take the time to drink cold coffee but don’t want to sacrifice our health.
After many on and off attempts at this morning routine, I had a breakthrough and learned that you can actually buy readily mixed protein coffee to go!
My favorite has to be the caramel frappe flavor from Ultimate Nutrition. These coffee protein shakes have a pretty impressive 15 grams of protein per serving, which is perfect for someone who is always on the go and needs to get protein in quick–like me!.
So why should you mix protein with coffee?
It’s a really tasty sweet-treat alternative
The caramel flavour makes for a delicious afternoon snack pre-gym. I can make it at work (so quick and easy) then enjoy it in the last half an hour of my shift before heading for my workout.
Not only is this a fantastic afternoon filler, but the sweetness cures those post-lunch sugar cravings and stops me from reaching for the biscuit tin. Here is a healthy, sweet alternative that is just perfect.
With only 1g of sugar per serving and absolutely no added sugar, I know I’m avoiding unwanted sugar crashes and weight gain.
As a matter of fact, there are only 90 calories in the caramel frappe flavour with just 1g of fat per serving. Tasty AND good for you!
It’s quick and easy
It’s often a struggle for me to look after my body the way I know I should – there’s just so much to think about. From making sure I’m taking natural multivitamins to work out, it can all get way too stressful.
It’s good to know that, thanks to Ultimate Nutrition, I can keep my protein intake just that little bit easier, and know that if I haven’t had as much as I should, their tasty mixes are quick and easy to make up.
The boost is amazing
The bit you’re probably still reading for is the amount of caffeine per serving. It’s actually really impressive – 115mg per serving. If you’re anything like me and don’t have a clue what that means, it equates to around two espresso shots of coffee. It’s the perfect boost before a long run or HIIT workout.
A variety of flavors available
Plus, if caramel frappe isn’t quite your thing, Ultimate Nutrition offers two other flavors that are just as delicious: Iced Coffee and Mocha Latte. The company really does offer something for everyone!
Give it a go, whichever way is best for you
However, I will admit that every now and again I do run out having forgotten to pack my Ultimate Nutrition blend. Life gets busy, right?
I find that protein coffee from Starbucks is equally delicious, although more pricey!
Long story short, protein coffee is the best way to nourish your body and get a good caffeine boost in the most efficient way possible.
Give it a go and see what you think. I guarantee you will be happy with the taste and the benefits. You won’t ever want to go back to plain coffee!
