A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF ANODIZING

An electronic appliance is worthless unless electricity powers it, an automobile won’t budge unless we fill its tank with fuel. THE CONCEPT OF HARD ANODIZING

The majority of cookware present in our kitchen cupboards consist of aluminum. Due to its lighter weight and non-conductivity, aluminum has been preferred over steel in the market for a very long time. Aluminum is made stronger through the process of anodizing. The scientific process of anodizing involves immersing aluminum in a bath of sulfuric acid which acts as an electrolyte. An electric current of low voltage is passed through the acid solution. This process forms a thin coat of aluminum oxide on the surface of the aluminum sheet. On cooling to the freezing point of water, the amount of electricity is increased subsequently. This chemical process is known as hard anodizing.

Some aluminum cookware may undergo the process of hard anodizing. Hard anodizing has advantages of its own. It produces a much thicker coating of aluminum oxide which penetrates the holes as well as fissures in the surface to result in a uniform appearance. As a result, hard anodized cookware is better than the regular anodized aluminum. Aluminum sheets processed using hard anodizing have a brown or black surface, but other colors can be created.

Hard anodized aluminum is a better option as compared to stainless steel. Manufacturing hard anodized aluminum is much easier than penetrating a similar block of stainless steel. These products are also resistant to harsh weather, salt sprays, and nother abrasive machining processes. It is also said to be so hard that it may walk toe to toe with diamond.

Applications of hard anodizing can be widely seen in the automobile industry and the commercial cookware industry.

Nonstick coatings like Teflon must possess a reliable method to create a strong adhesive bond. Hard anodizing can incorporate Teflon during the electrolytic process. When shopping for cookware, one must read the label carefully to find out if the product is an ‘anodized aluminum’ one or a ‘hard anodized one.’ The cookware marked ‘hard anodized’ has more durability, but it is expensive.
